The Art of Modern Leadership (9 days)
Run exclusively for the Atlantic Police Academy

Phonse MacNeil and Tim Brodie are the facilitators for this new leadership program developed exclusively for the Atlantic Police Academy.  Drawing from the leadership principles of the Canadian Forces combined with the operational needs of a public safety culture, the learners explore topics like the 10 principles of leadership and other relationship models designed to create high performance teams in operationally stressful environments. New this year, with permission from the team at Echelon Front, is the inclusion of the principles from the book "Extreme Ownership", written by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin,

Years of research on the current trends impacting police organizations throughout the Atlantic region culminated in the combination of traditional lessons with up-to-date evidence-based processes that create this innovative and reflective program.  Through extensive connections and interviews with police members we have developed a program that best fits the leadership needs of a modern police team.

These nine days of learning are a combination of experiential learning mixed with a wide variety of models that can be applied to develop individual leadership capacities.  However, the learning also requires a deep amount of self-reflection.  The facilitators pose questions around the essential skills of a successful leader in contrast to the natural strengths and unconscious blind spots of the learners.

Suring the course participants will be engaged in the military principles of leadership, Peel's principles, Lenionci's model, and the fundamental principles of Extreme Ownership (the principles from Jocko Willink and Leif Babin). While engaged in syndicate discussion, participants will actively create a shared pool of knowledge that leverages the wisdom of the full team in this learning experience. The course will culminate in each learner receiving a personalized WE-Q profile from Learning in Action Technologies, which will help reveal potential blind spots that are robbing them from understanding their team dynamics to the fullest.

From theory to knowledge acquisition to project implementation the learners are supported completely.  There simply is no other leadership development learning experience like this.

Outcomes

- Learners will gain insight into the art of leadership and how it applies in a broad public safety environment.

- Learners will see how their emotional intelligence impacts their team environment.

- Learners will understand the specific dynamics needed to create high-performing teams.

- Learners will receive the skills necessary to take full ownership of their roles as a leader in a dynamic environment.

What attendees said about this course:

A currently serving police Sergeant said "I wasn't sure what to expect from the course.  I was hopeful that I would learn some techniques to make me a better leader.  I came away from this course not only with tools to be a better leader and ideas to improve my workplace, I came away as a better person.  I have new skills to use both at work and home, which I think will translate into a more meaningful life."

Another senior member of a public safety agency said "The Modern Day Leadership course is way ahead of anything currently available.  It is valuable and necessary, and all organizations should take advantage of the immense knowledge and experience that Phonse and Tim provide.  I am confident and excited to apply skills I've learned to my organization.  Thank you!"

Fundamental Leadership (5 days)
Fundamental Leadership.jpg

This five-day experience draws from lessons learned by the Royal Canadian Airforce while deploying their teams to the high stress operations in Afghanistan.  Leveraging on the solid research leaders can learn the skills necessary to see, on average, a 30% increase in effectiveness and efficiencies in their organization. By learning the five basic leadership styles we call “the fundamentals”, participants in this course will begin to see how they can leverage conflict, transforming it from a negative experience to an experience of unconditional appreciation, inclusion, and respect.

Outcomes

- Participants gain insight into their current unconscious leadership style, and options to expand their command presence

- Participants use actual conflict scenarios to learn previously unseen perspectives of team-building

- Participants learn to create the tools necessary to create effective operational plans

- Participants learn how to apply Acceptance and Commitment Theory to increase awareness of what their team needs to accomplish goals
